Student takes part in Pennies for Patients fundraiser

Earlier this spring, Minnewashta students, families and staff served the greater good through their annual Pennies for Patients fundraiser, which raises money for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. From March 15-19, the school raised nearly $7,000 to support patients battling cancer.

While the Pennies for Patients fundraiser has been hosted in person in years past, this year it was done virtually so that students in all learning models could take part in the week’s events.  Kindergarten teacher Carly Brown and teacher on special assignment Jenny Van Aaslburg collaborated with Minnewashta’s team of Kindergarten teachers to plan a fun experience for all students.

“In total, our school raised $6,981. The goal was only $2,021,” said Van Aalsburg. She added that this was the highest amount ever raised for Pennies for Patients at Minnewashta in the fundraiser’s 20-year history.

To promote the event, Minnewashta had a series of themed dress-up days throughout the week. On these days, students wore pajamas, hats, St. Patrick's day apparel, superhero costumes, and Tonka pride gear to get them excited about fundraising. Students learned about the importance of serving others and advocating for a cause.

“[Getting involved in charity work from a young age] fosters the development of good character and social responsibility,” said Ms. Van Aalsburg. “It inspires students to understand and serve the greater good.”
