MHS Heart Week Raises $53k for Local Non-Profit

In February, the Minnetonka High School community came together to hold its yearly Heart Week fundraiser. Student Government plans Heart Week and coordinates accompanying events, including a benefit dinner, silent auction, musical telegrams, dress up days, a trivia night, Friday Fest, and the Sweethearts Dance. During the course of the week, student participation in the festivities helped to raise money for Family Friends, a local nonprofit that supports students and families in need. This year, combined efforts raised $53,000.

“Family Friends is a nonprofit organization that not only provides financial support to Minnetonka students and families in need, but also accompanies them and empowers them as they navigate challenges of everyday life,” said Rebecca Johnson, advisor for Student Government at Minnetonka High School. “Family Friends makes our neighbors and peers feel valued, capable, and cared for.”

Student Government begins planning Heart Week in December, Johnson shared. A lot of coordination is needed to ensure the fun is "ready to roll" by Valentine's Day.

“Heart Week and Family Friends is something very unique about Minnetonka, and we just want more people to know about this amazing organization and the impact they make in our community on a daily basis,” said Johnson. “The organization's reach extends to all levels of Minnetonka Public Schools, from early childhood to high school, and to a wide variety of people, in a vast array of circumstances. If anyone is able to give to Family Friends, we hope they consider it, knowing that their donation goes directly back into this community. The money goes to those that need help; it does not pay for salaries, office space, or advertising. Minnetonka is a better, brighter place to be due to the work of Family Friends, and Student Government is so proud to support them with Heart Week each year.”

Congratulations on an amazing Heart Week, Tonka!
