New “Kinder Commons” at Excelsior Elementary Fosters Connection and Creativity

An innovative learning space at Excelsior Elementary is already transforming how the District’s youngest learners connect and explore. The Kinder Commons is a space designed by the school’s Kindergarten team. Each day, students from various classrooms come together to engage in hands-on exploration with four interactive sensory tables and two STEAM-focused stations. The flexible design allows for rotating materials and activities throughout the year, ensuring fresh challenges and discoveries for students each time they visit.

The Kinder Commons brings together students from all kindergarten classrooms, creating dynamic opportunities for friendship and collaborative learning between students who normally spend their days in different language-learning environments. It provides another meaningful opportunity for connection between students in Chinese Immersion and English programs, building on interactions during lunch, recess, and special electives like music, physical education and art.

“Whether they are engineering with blocks, conducting simple science experiments, or engaging in creative play, our Kindergarteners are building connections while developing critical thinking skills,” said Excelsior Elementary Principal Jennifer Smasal. “The space represents our commitment to both academic excellence and building a strong sense of belonging across our Chinese Immersion and English programs.”

The Kinder Commons exemplifies the school’s and district’s dedication to creating an inclusive, enriching environment where every student can thrive. “It's more than just a space—it's a bridge bringing our learning community closer together, one exploration at a time,” said Smasal. “As we continue to enhance the space with new furniture and learning materials, we're already seeing the impact: Kindergarteners eagerly sharing discoveries with new friends, building confidence in collaborative settings, and developing the social and academic skills that will serve them throughout their educational journey.”
